Roman Road, Twyford

This two-storey detached Edwardian / Victorian village home was set on a private road in the desirable village of Twyford just outside Winchester. The house had last been altered in the early 1980s and was in need or updating for the new owners.

The existing building had impressive proportions but was compromised by a two-storey extension built to modern storey heights. As a result, the house felt cut off from the garden while the first-floor bathroom was half a flight of stairs down into the extension.

The brief included the provision of a large family room, kitchen and boot room and regularising the levels on the first floor.

Our solution provided the space the clients needed and an attractive rear elevation. In addition, the first floor provided an enlarged bedroom, a second ensuite bathroom and a large laundry room.  The final part of the proposals included a large loft room as a later phase of work to future-proof the home and provide flexibility for many more years.

The footprint of the extension reused some of the earlier extension to minimise additional costs. Structural work was carefully co-ordinated with the existing structure and new beams hidden away to retain the impressive proportions of the existing house. Window placement maximised the daylight inside. These architectural alterations then provided an adaptable basis for the kitchen and living space and ensures future flexibility as and when living habits change.

The extension blends seamlessly with the existing building with a light and contemporary interior that echoes the traditional detailing of the house.
